Critical Thinking

It’s the 21st Century – except in Malaysia

While scrolling through the MSN website, I came across this story:

It’s a story of some Canadian trekkers going for a hike on Mount Kinabalu in Malaysia.  Apparently during their hike, some of the hikers stripped to various states of undress.  The result?  Two Saskatchewan siblings are being detained as authorities spend four days investigating their alleged crime of obscenity: posing naked for a photo on the peak of the sacred Mount Kinabalu and angering its spirit guardians into triggering an earthquake that killed 18 mountaineers.

Yes you read that right.  Naked hikers cause earthquakes.

I would absolutely love to get my hands on the report (if there is such a thing) written by the authorities as to how they determined that the naked Canadian hikers were the cause of an earthquake.  I think that would make for the most amazing reading ever.

The good news is that it sounds like the hikers will be able to get away with a fine instead of imprisonment.  That will determine whether or not I label this as a tragedy or a comedy.

  1. archaeopteryx1 says:

The area where I live has experienced 67 earthquakes so far this year – it’s enough to make me want to go in and put some clothes on!

  2. That’s what’s been going on! What are you doing? Trying to ruin everything? Get yourself dressed post haste before there’s another one! Those “spirit guardians” definitely don’t like nakedness.
Hey wait a minute! What kind of spirit guardian wouldn’t like watching hawt naked chicks or dudes (depending on your gender and how you roll) strut around? They sound pretty prudish to me! Maybe they caused the earth quakes because there wasn’t enough nakedness? Anyone ever think of that?!?!?!

  3. Two Canadians, one British and one Dutch were found guilty of committing an obscene act and fined 5,000 Malaysian Ringgits plus 3 days in prison. They were not charged with causing an earthquake or offending a supernatural spirit.

They had stripped naked naked on the top of the mountain and posed for photographs. They ignored the pleading of their guide not to strip calling him stupid and to go to hell. They reportedly also urinated on the mountain top. Both acts showed a disrespect for local values and customs, and caused offence.

I’m sure that there are many locations in the USA where similar behaviour would be deemed offensive and offenders likely to face a fine and/or prison. And I’m sure that there are many fundamentalist Christians who are waiting for the wrath of God to descend down on America in the wake of the Supreme Court decision on marriage equality. I think it’s a little unkind to call out Malaysia on this one.

    • Yes Barry, they were originally detained because they were thought to have caused earthquakes with their nudity. It’s right there in the story that I posted. Maybe you should read it. Read about it here again if you don’t believe me.
They apparently have to do a “special ritual” now to appease those spirits.
Secondly, there is nothing other than the say so of the guide that the people were being disrespectful. However, call me crazy, I don’t think people should be thrown in jail for 3 days for disrobing at the top of a mountain and I certainly don’t think that naked people cause earthquakes. It takes a special kind of stupid to think like that in my opinion.
The fact that there are many religious, ignorant, intolerant bigots in America who have just had a collective melt down after Friday’s Supreme Court ruling that gay people can get married to each other, doesn’t change the fact that these people in Malaysia are also ignorant, superstitious fools.
Because I haven’t crticized the Americans, I shouldn’t criticize the Malaysians?
Your logic is very faulty Barry.
P.S. I have something planned in the way of a post after Friday’s ruling, I just haven’t gotten around to it yet because I am on holidays and I am too busy sleeping, reading, watching movies, sunning and drinking. Maybe next week.
