In a piece that one would have thought to have been written in The Onion, Saudi Arabia has been named to a Human Rights panel within the UN. Saudi Arabia is a country that ranks 168th out of 180 countries on the World Press Freedom Index (see here https://index.rsf.org/#!/), ranks 141 out of 152 countries on the Human Freedom Index (See here http://www.fraserinstitute.org/sites/default/files/human-freedom-index-preliminary-report.pdf) and has currently been in the news for the imprisonment and flogging of Raif Badawi, co-founder and author of the Liberal Saudi Network blog. Raif has been sentenced to 10 years in prison, 1000 lashes and fined 1 000 000 Riyals (equivalent to roughly CAD$ 354 000) for “insulting Islam”. There is still a possibility that he will be tried for Apostasy, which would carry a death sentence if convicted.
This takes the tolerance of intolerance to staggeringly new heights (or should I say lows?). A world so dependent on fossil fuels that the providers of this essential commodity can literally say and do anything they want to their citizens and not only will the entire world look the other way, they’ll even offer them praise and reward for doing so. The UN has officially become a joke to me.
